Third & Hollywood — Bar and Grill
The owners of this restaurant were drawn to this building because of its authenticity. Built in the early part of the 1900's as an
repair shop the roof is timber construction held up by masonry bearing walls.
With an owner serving on the board of trustees for the
Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association -
the connection to agriculture and specifically Ohio agriculture is at the heart of this restaurant. The menu features the best
ingredients the rich soils of Ohio have to offer – augmented by carefully selected ingredients from around the country. These are
combined to create a straightforward, classic menu. Great burgers, grilled fish, roasted chicken, fresh salads and vegetables.
The same sensibilities inform the design. A limited palate of materials was selected – American walnut and cherry are the primary
woods utilized. Booths are created with polished face masonry blocks made in Michigan. Sound control is achieved using wood
fiber panels fabricated in Ohio. Various accent elements throughout the space are made from raw hot rolled steel.
The room is organized around three elements — a large wood burning fireplace, the 22-foot-long solid cherry bar, and the
open kitchen. A wall of cast iron tractor seats adorns a wall adjacent to the wine rack. They were selected for their
sculptural beauty and of course their connection to traditional methods of agriculture. But they also serve as a reminder
of the infinite variety of nuanced possibilities latent in the careful conception of even the most prosaic items.
